My first reaction is to say "Great, anyone can do that with a medium format camera. I guess Khuram just bought a Leica S." (just saw a bunch of photos taken with the Leica S and I have to say, I was completely floored by the technical quality).

But nope, it's just a shitty Rebel ;)

Which brings me to my point: Technically, the image is very very impressive! Focus is absolutely right on. Second, DoF is perfect too; not to shallow but shallow enough to bring into focus multiple aspects of the image: Fingers, watch and eye-piece. But it's shallow enough to throw the pink shirt and background out of focus so that color becomes almost detached floating. Clever, very clever!

The dirt on the fingers also provide credibility to the man's profession. This isn't just a posed photo op.

To summarize, Khuram, one of your best, in my opinion!

Patrick

I love the intensity and focus. I can almost here the noise, and smell the dust. And the subtle contradiction of doing precision work on a watch by the side of the road with dirty hands.

But, but, I love my shitty Rebel. :(
Haha! I'd buy a Leica if I could... but like a lot of things, I cannot afford it - and even if I could, I probably wouldn't know what to do with it. ;)

Come on man, you should know by now that I absolutely suck at taking posed photos. He really was working on that watch at the time (pardon the pun).
It was only after the sound of the shutter had gone off that he realised that I had taken his picture. The loupe has a very narrow field of view - like looking through a microscope, thereby rendering the wearer somewhat blind to his surroundings; it was the perfect opportunity to move my camera in closer and take the shot, which I did, and this is the result.

Thank you so much for taking the time yet again to critique and for the comment too - which is quite unusual; it's word for word the same as the critique. =P
Seriously though, I really appreciate it, man. My sincere, sincere thanks to you, Patrick.
You rock! :horns:

I know, my initial attempt was to post a critique but realized that I had written it as a comment so I copy/pasted the text into a critique field...

Anyway, now that I have insulted you, I would like to kindly ask that you and your Canon Rebel "friends" buy me a Leica S..... ;)  Xmas, you know, is right around the corner!

As for the critique, any time my friend! Critiquing great photos is easy, but much less useful, I suppose.

No free Leicas, but plenty for sale!  Too expensive for me, and I'd rather go on a trip or two for the price!

As you know, I'm a fan of Gilden's photography so it was nice seeing unpublished work.

He has a new project called I think, Postcard America, where he goes around a take closeup portraits of people he finds in the street. For that project, he uses exclusively a Leica S and the results are simply amazing! such clarity, depth, and color!

On a personal level, let's just say that he and I won't be best friends any time soon...

though I agree on all the rest of your comment. A wonderful photo, an extremely precise focus and a great control of the color.
