Street Photography:
Non-People Street can be a touchy subject for some 'purists'.
I remember back when I had just started working on #TheStreetFactor
and was toying with the idea to include a Non-People Street folder in the gallery.
I was chatting with a good friend of mine, who also happens to be a brilliant Street Photographer.
He found the whole concept absurd:
My purist friend: Non-Human Street?! That's absurd!
Me: How so?
My purist friend: You CANNOT photograph buildings and objects in candid situations for one.
A Street shot without people isn't really considered as Street Photography.
Me: What about HCB? He did a lot of Non-People Street too.
(I didn't know much about Bresson back then; I was only taking a blind shot in the dark...)
My purist friend: Well, yeah...
Me: Aha!.
(...Bullseye!)
It was Eric Kim (My purist friend calls him a "Justin Bieber of Street Photography", probably because Eric makes more money than he does) who said it best:
"I feel that effective street photographs without people show the uncanny of everyday life, while showing remnants of humanity."
I for one, fully agree with that statement.
Non-People Street (NPS) can be tricky, and most people tend to confuse NPS with Urban Exploration - just like the many who mistake Street photography with taking pictures of alleys.
Urban Exploration (UE) consists mainly of images taken inside of old buildings,
or certain sections of an alley, underground bunkers, caves and such.
NPS, even though it follows the same route, focuses more on the 'human' elements of UE
i.e., humor, juxtapositions, irony etc. - it's a more philosophical approach to photography (just like UE),
but is more in tune with human emotions and interactions between the subject and the environment.
Non-People Street Photography is all about eliciting human feelings from non-human subjects.
