Street BumsDosser, Hobo, Lowlife, Tramp, Contemptible Git...

...are just some of the few non-R-rated names a homeless person goes by.
In 2005, the United Nations conducted a survey which put the number of homeless at an estimated 100 million, worldwide.
As of 2012, the unofficial estimate is anywhere between 250 to 300 million.
But that's not what this journal is about.
Many of us are uncomfortable with photographing homeless folk because it feels like some sort of exploitation, like we're taking advantage of their misery.... stuff like that.
The main purpose of this journal is to invite fellow deviants to discuss, ask questions - maybe even attempt to answer a few of them, so that we can better understand the ethical conflicts, the stigma (faced by photographers - especially Street photographers), and the moral risks associated with taking candid photos of the homeless in a public place, without their consent.

Matt WeberMatt Weber shots his way through life.
Started out as a taxi driver and saw so many things on the streets that he kept saying "If only I had a camera…" A camera seemed like the only way to capture the crazy stuff which was happening almost every night.
Claims that the 70's were more interesting than the 80's, but in December 1984 bought a competitive camera, an AE-1 and a 50mm lens.
Started out in color film, but one year after he turned to b/w, because color was tricky to develop.
Thinks that failure is important, and that failing over 99% of the time and not giving up is something to be proud of. Takes "awful pictures on a daily basis and always will. There aren't too many other types of photography where that's the expected result."

My son and I were crossing a street through an alley in Al Diyafah - Dubai, when I saw the bicycle and immediately noticed that the blowing air current, along with the excess cargo of flattened and stacked cardboard boxes was making the front wheel rise up from the ground slightly and then descend once the wind subsided.
I instinctively knew that something was about to go down - or up. So I asked my son to 'SLO' down: Stop, Look, and Observe, while I got my camera ready.
And we waited. We were standing there for like, 20 seconds when this guy walks in frame....
Then it happens: The front wheel goes up, the guy is baffled, and my son and I are standing there barely holding ourselves from rolling on the floor, laughing! It was a good day.
P.S. We helped him with his bicycle afterwards.

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY FEATURESTREET ON DA
dA, as any community on the internet has its pro's and con's. For me the best part of dA has been The Yard Collective #The-Yard-Collective, a group for street photography aficionados of all skill levels from all corners of the world. For the last year I have had the priviledge of leading this group, but as of today this is no longer the case. Instead *NunoCanha is its new Skipper.
Anway, it was a blast and as a tribute to The Yards members as well as to the genre of street photography itself, I below showcase some of my favorite images that belong to the group. (Sorry fellow group admins, only non-admin members only, after all, they are the blood that is being pumped through the groups vains.)

was among the first photographers to successfully use color, especially in the fields of
Documentary and Street Photography, to great acclaim.

Born in Jaipur, India, Singh attended St. Xavier's School school and it was here that he discovered Cartier-Bresson's
little-known book, Beautiful Jaipur, published in 1949, which inspired his interest in photography.
Later on after a year of studying arts at The Hindu College in New Delhi, Raghubir decided to drop out.
Now, with time on his hands, he began taking photographs using a camera
his brother, Pratap Singh had brought for him from Hong Kong.

Goodbye Street GalleryIn few days, a whole year will have passed since the day I took over dA's Street Gallery as Street Community Volunteer.
A neglected gallery, full of misplaced images, but also with many worthy submissions.
I visited this galllery everyday, cleaning it (the 24h and 1month popular pages) and informing the photographers of the misplaced images (every single one of them), what Street is all about.
At the same time, 3 days per week, I featured a worthy image as a Street Daily Deviation, taking in account your suggestions as well. The featured images were not necessarily the "best" of the featured deviants. My intention was not to feature "bests" but to draw the community's attention, to active Street photographers, both experienced and new to the genre, in order to boost their dedication to Street. Decisive Moment vs Moment to DecideHenri Cartier-Bresson defines "The Decisive Moment" as follows:
"There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative. Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever."
However, Henri Cartier-Bresson didn't only take one single photograph when he saw a decisive moment ready to happen (David Hurn refers to this as a "pregnant moment") but rather took several images of the same scene.
That truth is reinforced by the fact that "Gare" is one of only two photographs I know of that Cartier-Bresson cropped. There was a fence off to the left, and he didn't have time to move to the right before it was time to shoot.

5 Street Photography ClichesWhen I first sat down to craft my top 5 list of clichés found in street
photography I thought it was going to be a very quick exercise. I figured I would list 5 common photographs I usually see on groups on the internet and be done. Before I could even start crafting a list I needed to understand the definition of cliché.
Wikipedia defines it as:
"an expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel"
I quickly realized that a quick list of 5 types of photographs wouldn't suffice as in a couple months it could be obsolete. For instance, if you were to ask me a year ago I might have said black and white photographs but now street photography on the whole seems to be moving more towards colour street photographs.

Let's close our eyes and imagine going out in the streets and looking for unusual things. What do we expect to find? People, first of all.
That's good, the HUMAN PRESENCE is a fundamental element of street photography.
If we want to use only this ingredient, we'll be able to realize a true street photo only if the person we capture will have something unusual or interesting or is doing something unusual or interesting. Otherwise we'll have a good portrait, an enviromental portrait, a wide portrait whatever, but not a street photo.

Posters! Posters!! Posters!!!

"Everyone in the business world knows the importance of
posters and ads in advertising for specific products.
Posters are an integral part of advertising. An eye-catching, attractive poster
that conveys a professional, compelling message about a product, service
or event will invariably hold the user's attention."**

That is until a Street Photographer comes along....

Posters, Billboards, Large Display Panels, etc. they're all around us!
Every street corner, building and display window in this ad-mad world of ours is adorned with these
wonderfully enticing, heavily photoshopped and grossly misleading sheets of prevarication.
Malls, museums, art galleries, subway, bus stations, airports, public toilets....
great places for (non pervy) Street Photographers to hang out on a slow day.
Now add posters into the mix and "BAM!" we have a great photo op on our hands!

If you're starting out in Street Photography, I'd say look no further.
Posters is the way to go.
All it requires is a little imagination, and a bit of luck.

Okay, so 'Poster Street' shots are terribly cliched and most DA Street groups won't readily
accept them in their galleries - so what? It's good practice and best of all, it works!

I've taken a few Poster Street shots myself and the response so far has been very positive.

Check out these excellent examples of how a mere 'Poster' shot, when done right,
can tell a completely different story from what's really on display:

nice article. sounds like fun.
my issue with poster shots are the possibilities of staged presentations . whats to prevent someone from setting their friends up and calling it a candid moment?

Any Street or Photojournalistic shot can be easily staged; not just poster shots.

Although there's nothing we can do to prevent the practice, we have no choice but to let
those publicity hogs enjoy their time in the limelight, in the hope that one day, truth will eventually
find a way to name and shame them just as extravagantly, as the undeserved praise lavished upon them.
